Lionel Asbo by Arienne Janssen

Lionel Asbo is a novel that is settled in a rough part of England. It tells a story of 2 characters, Lionel Asbo and Desmond Pepperdine. The story is written from Desmonds’ perspective. Desmond was the son of Lionel his sister who died when Desmond was still young. Lionel took care of Desmond, he loves Uncle Li but he is also terrified of him.

Lionel Asbo is not the type of man you want to be friends with. He is someone who feeds his pit bulls tabasco so they will get meaner and who changed his surname to Asbo because he was the youngest to receive an Anti-Social Behaviour Order. He is constantly in and out of jail and he has a strict policy that his mum Grace is too old for dating men. Desmond is 15 years old and has a secret that he doesn’t want Lionel to find out, his grandmother Grace seduced him. Years pass as Des lives with his secret, he doesn’t want to be like Lionel. He tries to establish a normal live by going to college, getting a job and getting a girlfriend. When Lionel is in jail he wins the lottery, which makes thing worse.

This was the first book I have ever read that made me nauseous and horrified. I hated reading this book. I do think it gives a good perspective of how times were those days, but the way Lionel does things made me nervous and uncomfortable. I got sucked into this book, like I was there.
